0270 Device Drivers
-------------------
Comment
Gilbreach, Skip
$?
is an MSDOS 2.0(+) device driver whose function is simply to echo a string to
the standard output device. The driver code is not actually installed by DOS
so no memory is wasted, and the driver can be referenced in CONFIG.SYS as often
as desired.
Dev
is a small utility for more advanced users. It will list all current
device drivers along with their memory addresses.
DviceMap 2.10 (DVICEMA)

locations for device drivers.
UMB_DRVR 5.22 (UMBDRVR)
Blum, Christopher
$25
is a DOS 5.0 device driver that will use the shadow memory capability of the
memory controller portion of various chip sets to force all ROM's not
specifically excluded to be shadowed, and expand DOS base memory beyond 640KB
if possible, and provide UMB's (Upper Memory Blocks) to DOS for loading
programs and device drivers into high memory while not using any resident
memory.

Assembler source code is included.
Cmosget & Cmosput (CMOSREA)
is intended to store a PC-AT's setup information which is normally stored
in battery-powered CMOS memory on the AT. Once stored, you can change the
battery and reload the parameters without having to use the AT's setup program
using the command CMOSPUT < CMOS.DAT in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
EasyDate 4.5 (EASYDAT)
Evans, Brian
$3
is a quick and easy way to set the date and time for users who don't have
hardware clocks. Features include: a running clock, command line options, it
will use latest date & time (either the stored date and time or the system date
and time), color, selection cursor has 'slide along' arrows, and it is windowed
in center of screen.
Enviro
is a patch for COMMAND.COM (IBM-PC) to allow for a larger environment area.
Currently, only 223 bytes total are allowed for environment string storage, with
all data over 223 bytes truncated. Use the patch to increase the size of this
data area.
Envxpand (ENVXPAN)

lets you patch your DOS version 2.0 to 3.3 to get a two-column DIR display. Why
waste half a screen? And it's faster than using most directory utilities (well,
except for PsL's DirPrompt).
HitAKey
Tackett, Raymond P.
$0
is a dummy device driver which stops and lets you look at the screen, then hit a
key to continue booting. It has no other effect on your system. Although the
author has a rather ominous warning about its use on systems other than his, we
tested it on different types of machines with no problems.
InitDate 1.0 (INITDAT)
Zentmayer, William G.
$0
displays the system date and time and optionally logs them into a file.
Nbscom 1.4
Antonio, Franklin
$0
will allow you to accurately set the DOS date/time in your PC using the
National Bureau of Standards Telephone Time Service. You simply run NBSCOM,

1035 Error Messages
-------------------
EA
Trimble, Timothy L.
$?
is a utility when you get a system error number on boot-up. To find out what
the number means, you simple enter EA nnnn. For example, if you get an error
301, you enter EA 301 and EA will tell you Keyboard did not respond to software
reset correctly or a stuck key failure was detected. If a stuck key was
detected, the scan code for the key is displayed.
DiagCode
is a list of diagnostic error codes and their meanings.
Diagnos
Schneider, Jerry
$0
is a pair of text files that tell how to interpret start-up beeps and error
messages and how to locate a bad memory chip.
Error Codes (ERRORS)
$0
is a list of about 500 error codes for the PC. This can be a big help if your
computer quits working and all it tells you is a number.
Perror
shows the chip numbers in a PC so that you know which to pull when you get
a parity error number.
Post Code Master 1.08 (PCM)
MicroSystems Development, Inc.
$62
is a menu driven database of Power On Self Test (POST) Codes generated by most
major BIOS's. (These are the beeps and codes you get on boot-up if there is a
problem with your system.) The two-digit code is displayed with an explanation
of the code. Also included are Beep codes and their meanings.
RomBeep
is a description of what various system beeps and error messages mean on
boot-up.
1035 Memory Testing
-------------------
Eat-Mem
Christensen, Ward
$?
helps you locate programs that fail because of memory location. This utility
eats up about 32K of memory every time it is run. Keep running EAT-MEM and your
program alternately until your program quits failing.
RamTest
has been developed as an exhaustive test of an IBM PC's system RAM. It is
much more comprehensive than the PC Power On Self Test (POST) and delivers
diagnostic messages which are much easier to understand. RAMTESTA is a version
for the PC-AT.
TestExt 3.4
Cyr, J. M.
$0
will test Extended (not Expanded) memory. It requires a 286 or better CPU.
1035 Memory Viewing

#3143 Memory Utilities Small Programs Disk
----------------------
EEMRam 2.10
Dunford, Christopher J.
$0
is a small utility by the author of CED/PCED (et al) that can expand your DOS
memory from 640K to a maximum of 736K using Enhanced Expanded Memory (EEM). To
use EEMRAM, you must have a memory board that provides EEM, such as the AST
RAMpage. The JRam board, for example, is NOT EEM and thus will not support this
utility. If your expanded memory card is not supported or not fully supported,
no damage is done: EEMRAM will simply tell you the extent of the limitations of
usage. There is also support for relocating extended BIOS data area (PS/2).
EMM286
Jjex Software
$0
is a public domain expanded memory simulator for 286's. All functions of the
LIM EMS 4.0 specification dated October 1987 are supported except DMA
functions. EMM286 requires an XMS driver, like HIMEM.SYS, for handling the
transfers to/from extended memory.
Emsim
Kam, Karlton
$?
is a device driver that lets up to 256k of your AT's extended memory (above
640k) emulate expanded memory that programs like Ready and 1-2-3 can run in.
Fast Load 1.24 (FASTLOD)
Microsystems Software, Inc.
$25
is a 2k TSR which provides instant execution of up to four specified programs,
including COMMAND.COM, by storing them in EMS/XMS when you exit them and
reloading them from memory when DOS tries to load them from disk. This is not a
task-swapping program, it simply lets your programs load faster. Networks are
supported.
HiVIDEO 2.03 (09-93 CD)
Softwaretechnik ASP
$15
expands DOS memory in text video modes by 96K by using graphics memory of the
VGA/EGA display adapter. Cannot be used if you are going to run graphics.
Requires DOS 3.0+, EGA/VGA and 640K memory.
Jambo
Adlersparre & Associates Inc.
$10
makes more upper memory available for loading drivers and TSR's high
under DOS 5.
MemSim 3.2
Harris Computer Consulting
$25
lets you use your hard disk to simulate EMS memory of up to 32 meg. This will,
of course, be substantially slower than EMS, but it can allow you to do things
that you might not otherwise be able to do, such as creating huge spreadsheets
in 1-2-3, which normally requires EMS.
NJRamt
Blaszczak, Mike
$?
does a thorough test of EMS memory on bootup. Test can be aborted to save time
by pressing a key.
Remm 4.10
is AST's latest expanded memory manager.
VRAM/386 1.0
Biologic
$25
is a powerful memory management program for 386 and 486 PCs. It enhances the
utilization of extended memory (memory above 1 megabyte) and high memory
(memory between 640K and 1024K) by providing up to 32 megabytes of EMS version
4.0 expanded memory and 944K of conventional memory for use by MS-DOS
programs. Also included is HRAM 1.0 which can create up to 96K of additional
low DOS memory, and up to 208K of high DOS memory. Both programs will function
alone, but together provide a complete memory enhancement package for 386 PCs.
Also included is a viewer for both Word Perfect 5.+ files and a standard
ASCII viewer. Many file management functions are also available.
--------------------------------
END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #3143
--------------------------------
---------------------
#0727 System Analysis Small Programs Disk
---------------------
ATextMem
Pardue, David G.
$5
is a program to determine the size of extended memory.
Bench87
is a benchmark test to test the accuracy and speed of the 8087, 80287, etc.
Cenv
provides information about your system.
CI
Smith, Simon
$?
identifies your CPU, clock speed, number of wait states and performance
relative to a plain IBM-PC.
CPUid
Smith, Bob
$?
tells you which CPU you have and if it is faulty or not.
Crit 1.00
Graham, Keith P.
$0
is an intelligent critical error handler. Gives more information and options
on critical errors.
Disk Meter Deluxe 2.0 (DMD)
P.C. Consulting
$5
displays free space remaining on disk both graphically and numerically for one
or more drives. The graphic display shows space used in yellow for over 50% and
in red for over 90%. The author suggests that consultants put DMD in client's
AUTOEXEC.BAT file with instructions to call when red blocks start showing up.
It will also work on monochrome systems and includes a similar memory checker.
DiskSpeed 1.05 (DISKSPD)
Reznick, Josh
$4
calculates the access time of a hard drive. See if your drive lives up to its
specs. (It appears to work only on drive C:.)
Equip2 1.0
Hanlin, Thomas G. III
$0
displays information about the equipment on which it's running.
Fastchk2 (FASTCHK)
is a different utility to provide system information, mostly about the
current drive.
IOView
Ad Infinitum Software
$0
lets you view memory mapped I/O ports in action.
MegaFlop 1.0 (MEGAFLP)
Walker, Barrie
$0
measures the floating point instruction speed of 80286/386/486 MS-DOS computers.
An Intel compatible math coprocessor is optional.
Mem 2.0 (MEM-DW)
Williams, Dave ASP
$0
displays information about system memory, DOS environment space, extended and
expanded memory, and more.
OverHead
simply wastes a lot of CPU time and executes a lot of interrupts. It is
completely CPU bound, no I/O is done. This is a harmless program, it's not a
destructive diagnostic. The purpose is to see how long it takes to perform a
given amount of CPU work. When no TSR's are loaded your program gets as much
CPU time as DOS can manage. But when TSR's are loaded they take some CPU time
to perform their housekeeping. This program lets you see how much time is being
taken by TSR's.
PC-Info 2.17 & PC-Ident 1.38
Robin, Max S. ASP
$15
tells you machine type, CPU type and manufacturer, NDP type, ROM BIOS date,
DOS version number, amount of system and extended and EMS memory and more.
Several additional makes and models of computers are now recognized by
PC-INFO, including IBM PS/2 model 55 and Model 70P. Support is also included
for Weitek numeric coprocessor, and a listing for all Serial and Parallel Port
Base Addresses. In addition, systems equipped with only a single floppy will
now have floppy disk information displayed on screen 2. We tested several of
these types of utilities and this was the most accurate. The program will
correctly handle hard disk partitions larger than 32 Mb and recognition code
has been added for several more machines.
The program correctly handles LCD display on Toshiba 1600 laptops and uniquely
recognizes several specific machines. A couple of things confused us: it says
we have "80x25 B&W Using Color Card" (we do not have B&W) and it shows 0K
extended, 256k expanded on a machine with 4 meg expanded. We figured out that
the 256k was the amount of exapanded that we allocated to the current window
in DESQview.
Reveal 2.0
EbSoft
$?
displays a list of memory control blocks in use with information about each
displayed in a window as you scroll through the list. You can select an area to
view a greater level of detail. This is both a useful and educational utility
for the technically inclined.
Speed
compares a system's cpu speed to a standard PC.
SpeedIs
tells you what speed ("fast" or "slow") your computer is running at if you
have a two-speed machine. Most computers have lights that tell you this, but
possibly some don't (or we assume this utility wouldn't have been written.)
Status
There are a lot of these utilities that display your system configuration
status, but this one has a nice approach. It graphically displays the settings
of your motherboard switches, the options their various settings can represent
and the ones you are currently running under.
Test
Thomas, Al
$?
is for testing the speed of your system using Lotus 1-2-3 and this worksheet
(which expands from 9k to 500k after loading).
Vects
displays the interrupt vectors.
Vis-sys
will provide you with a graphical representation of a system's
configuration.
Visual Systems Information (VSI)
gives a graphic display of what's on your system. As the author says,
"Cute."

switches. That allows faster power-up sequence by setting the motherboard
memory switch settings and patch the ROM BIOS data area to indicate that this
PC has four floppy diskettes installed (instead of the normal two). This is
for ram disk emulation programs that require the motherboard equipment options
switch to be set to include the number of ram disks. This is most notably
required by the AST RESEARCH ramdisk program called SUPERDRV.
Qwikst31
is a patch to DOS 3.1 to let you start up your system more quickly by
passing on checking memory above 128k. (on disk #0664)
RAMset
